PROJECT : VIDEOGRAPHY AND TRANSCRIBING
It just frees up my time. It means, I can spend my time earning money by working for my clients. That’s the return on investment. My time is worth more than the hours I was spending, editing walls of text that were coming out of video interviews I was doing with people for my own content. – Samantha Tonge | Founder – Labrakita Marketing
COULD YOU TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT LABRAKITA MARKETING AND WHAT YOU DO?
I am a marketing consultant and I work with customers in three main ways, I work with them as a virtual marketing manager for clients that simply just don’t have the time to do the marketing management themselves. I have clients where I just work with them on a project-by-project basis, so it’s a specific marketing project they need to get done and they need expert help or other clients, especially the much smaller clients, start-ups, and your one-man band. I help them to put together that brand and their marketing plan and then they go out and do it themselves.
WHAT KIND OF PROBLEMS WERE YOU FACING BEFORE COMING TO UDRAFTER?
It was getting busy for me personally and obviously strategy, marketing strategies is the core of what I do so I needed help with the areas that I am not an expert in. So, I work with external resources, including Udrafter and freelancers to deliver what I need. Recently it has been getting especially busy, and I was not so good at getting my own content done. That where it is really helped me is I can now focus on my clients.
WHY DID YOU THINK YOU NEEDED AN INTERN SPECIFICALLY?
Two things really. One, for what I was working on I knew an English student would be good at the copy and editing task that I needed completed and would be a lot quicker than me. The second thing is, I was a student once. I was incredibly lucky to get office work, which really helped me when it came to finding a job.
It was much tougher for my partner who had done work as a student, but we are talking about your typical student jobs that come with money, but not experience. So, I want to help someone out, so that when they graduate, they’ve got not just been able to help fund themselves, they’ve also got relevant experience that will help them when they graduate to find a job.
HAD YOU HIRED OR WORKED WITH INTERNS BEFORE YOU CAME TO UDRAFTER?
I’ve worked at various companies that have offered work experience or paid internships, but I’ve never done it directly before for my own business.
HIRING AN INTERN FOR THE FIRST-TIME INTERN FOR THE FIRST TIME, WHAT WAS IT LIKE AND HOW DID YOU FEEL?
It is a very simple system, and I was amazed at how many students applied. There were a lot with good skills, and some have already built up that experience with some micro internships already through Udrafter.
Overall, it was a really easy process, and you need a little bit more oversight than you do with experienced freelancers. So, you’ve got to bear that in mind because you’re going to be checking work more than you would be, someone has been doing it for some years. So you do have to selective with certain projects as some may require a certain level of experience.
WHAT WAS THE RETURN ON YOUR INVESTMENT INTO A UDRAFTER INTERN?
It just frees up my time. It means, I can spend my time earning money by working for my clients. That’s the return on investment. My time is worth more than the hours I was spending, editing walls of text that were coming out of video interviews I was doing with people for my own content. So that was the biggest advantage for me at the moment.
WHY UDRAFTER OR OTHER METHODS OF RECRUITMENT?
Well, I’ll be honest, it’s the only way I’ve gone about it personally. I imagine if you’re approaching universities or going to career departments, it is going to be a bit more hit and miss. Whereas with Udrafter you can say exactly what it is you’re after and students can find you very easily.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY DESCRIBES YOUR EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH UDRAFTER? AND WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU GOT THE MOST VALUE OUT OF IT?
I would describe it as a very easy system to use. The value I got out of it is, well, two things. I feel like I’m doing something good for someone else. So, it makes me feel good inside but it also really does free up my time, which, as I said, is more valuable to me.
HOW LIKELY WOULD YOU BE TO RECOMMEND US AND WHY SHOULD SOMEONE WHO COULD BE LISTENING TO THIS RIGHT NOW?
If you’re spending time on something that someone who’s studying a particular field could do for you, your time is probably spent better on something else. As I said, sometimes, often you are going to need that person with all that experience. That’s not always going to be the case. If you’ve got those jobs on your plate that’s taking up too much time and could be better spent getting on with something else, why not think about using a student?
Paying the student I think is a really important part of Udrafter, because I think it aligns with my morals because I think it’s wrong to use students, and then you end up with a situation where only students who happen to have wealthy parents and can afford to work for free, end up with relevant experience. I think that’s wrong.
